Sen. Janette Millin Young is a 1987 graduate of Sts. Peter and Paul High School on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism, with a minor in Sociology from Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1991. Upon her graduation from college, she was recruited to work as a full-time employee in the Governor’s Office of Public Relations for three years from 1991, rising to the position of Senior Public Information Officer.
In 1995, she had the pleasure of working for the Roy L. Schneider Administration as Senior Public Information Officer and rising to the position of Territorial Media Director for the Office of the Governor until December 1998.
In January 1999, the senator signed on to work with the V.I. Daily News as Senior Editorial Writer. She later moved on to serve as Director of Corporate Affairs for Innovative Communication Corporation in 2000, and then as Innovative Telephone’s Public Relations Manager in 2002.
Sen. Millin Young has been affiliated with numerous business, social and charitable organizations such as Rotary Club of St. Thomas since 1997, St. Thomas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. since 1988, and the Nana Baby Home Foundation, a home for foster children, since 2007.
In March 2002, Sen. Millin Young began publishing a local monthly magazine, V.I. Chronicles, which featured stories about people, politics, and events with a local flavor. She later moved on to three short stints of working in different capacities for a financial capital management firm, the V.I. Legislature, and the V.I. Department of Health before returning to Innovative in 2005. She resigned from ICC in June 2010 to launch her first senatorial campaign.
On November 2, 2010, Sen. Millin Young was elected to serve in the 29th Legislature of the Virgin Islands, and was sworn into office on January 10, 2011. She served as the Senate’s Chairman of the Committee on Education, Youth and Culture. She served as the 30th Legislature’s Legislative Secretary and Chair of the Committee on Economic Development, Agriculture, and Planning.
Re-elected to her third term in November 2014, the senator is the 31st Legislature’s vice president and continues to chair the Committee on Economic Development, Agriculture and Planning. Senator Millin Young is also the founder of the non-profit group Women Striving for Success.
In August 2015, Senator Millin Young was elected to serve as the National Council of State Legislature’s Eastern Region Representative of the Women’s Legislative Network. Senator Millin Young was selected by the readers of the Daily News as best senator on St. Thomas 2014-2016. She was awarded the 2016 SBDC territorial small business advocate of the year.
Sen. Millin Young is the daughter of former Lt. Governor Henry A. Millin (deceased) and Graciela Millin. She is married to Chief Master Sergeant Cuteill Young of the V.I. Air National Guard. Together, they have one son, Joshua Cuteill Young.
