Senator Brian A. Smith
Brian A. Smith is a retired United States Probation Officer. He was employed at the District Court of the Virgin Islands, United States Probation Office from 1993 until his retirement on December 31, 2015. During Brian's tenure at the probation office, he also provided community services at various schools in an effort to assist in preventing the students from becoming involved in criminal activities. Prior to his employment at the probation office, Brian was a school teacher at the Julius E. Sprauve Elementary School in St. John from 1989-1992; and an adult education instructor at that same school during 1990 until 1992. He was also an activities desk & beach attendant at the Caneel Bay Resort; and a bartender at the Pusser's Bar & Restaurant in St. John.
In 1989, Brian obtained a Master's Degree in Adult Education from Florida A&M University located in Tallahassee, Florida. In 1987, he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Agribusiness from Florida A&M University. Brian is a 1983 graduate of the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, located in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Additionally, he is a former Cub Scout Leader and Lions Club member.
During Brian's employment at the District Court, he saw a need to make the communities in the Virgin Islands better. He constantly indicated that one day he will be a part of the solution in a different capacity. Specifically, his intention was to bid for public office.
Therefore, immediately following his retirement on December 31, 2015, Brian organized his bid for the Senator At Large. He was extremely passionate about this endeavor, and with God's grace he was successful. Brian is hard working, accessible, honest, reliable and humble. His mantra is "Progress and Economic Opportunities for All!" Hence, Brian's employment history is so amazing. That is, his pending employer is the Legislative branch of government, and his former employer at retirement, was the Judicial branch of government. This is an individual who is prepared to serve the people of the United States Virgin Islands.
Brian was born on August 5, 1965, in Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands. His parents are Raphalia Smith of Huntums Ghut, Tortola and Austin Smith of Cruz Bay, St. John; both are deceased.
At the age of five, Brian migrated from Tortola to St. John, United States Virgin Islands, with his parents and siblings. He lovingly calls St.John his home, and resides there with his wife Betty, and their two children: William, age 19, who attends the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas campus; and Christopher, age 15, who attends the Charlotte Amalie High School in St. Thomas.
