Senator Athneil J. Thomas

Athneil Joseph Thomas, known affectionately as “Bobby”, was born on St. Thomas, and is the youngest of five sons born to Austin E. Thomas of Tortola, & Keturah C. McKay, of Antigua. Bobby earned the reputation as a community-minded individual who places the service of others above self.  His strong family circle and close-knit community contributed to the man that represents you today. Bobby’s story is a quintessential Virgin Islands’ story. A product of St. Thomas’ Joseph Gomez Elementary, Bertha C. Boschulte Junior High and Ivanna Eudora Kean High Schools, Bobby learned early on the importance of community.  He grew up in Old Tutu and spent the better part of a very happy childhood in and around the Alvin McBean Complex.  Communities converged on that complex and life lessons of cooperation, sportsmanship, fellowship, and conflict resolution was taught there daily. These lessons proved invaluable to Bobby, who after high school, traveled to Florida to study journalism at Florida A&M University.

When he successfully obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree, Bobby returned to the Virgin Islands and immersed himself within the community. He volunteered for PTAs, coached Little League Baseball and participated in other sports-related organizations, becoming a mentor to many young men. He volunteers for the Virgin Islands Carnival Committee and serves the Memorial Moravian Church in the Men’s Fellowship and on the multi-media team, among other responsibilities. Bobby also served in the National Guard for 24 years, which included a one-year deployment to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. As a career central staff employee of the Legislature of the Virgin Islands, Bobby spent 24 years working his way from the entry-level position of photojournalist to his most recent post as the Director of Public Affairs.

As Director, he has advocated for the modernization of the office and for providing up-to-date information and coverage, so that the public can maintain the ability to view and hear what affects them daily.  After witnessing Virgin Islands’ history from a front-row seat for 24 years, Bobby offered to serve his community as their advocate and partner in a new role championing their issues and concerns. The community accepted his offer and elected Athneil “Bobby” Thomas to serve in the 33rd Legislature. Bobby believes his knowledge, experience and willingness to serve his community will result in progress…forward. Bobby is married to Frances S. Thomas, and they are the parents of two sons, Athneil, Jr., and Aseah.
