Senator Sammuel Sanes

Senator Sammuel Sanes was born in Brooklyn, New York and was raised on St. Croix where he graduated from St. Croix Central High School in 1982.  During his school years, Sammuel Sanes was involved in several organizations including the Boy Scouts, Sea Explorers and JROTC.  After high school, he joined the United States Navy, and after serving five years, he received an Honorable Discharge.  Senator Sammuel Sanes then furthered his education and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Florida Memorial University.  Upon graduation, Senator Sanes obtained employment with Florida’s Department of Children & Families during which time, he earned an Associates degree in Legal Studies from Keiser College and went on to become a State Certified Case Manager where he received many commendations and letters of appreciation.

In June 2009, Sammuel Sanes received his Master’s degree in Educational Counseling from the University of the Virgin Islands.  Senator Sanes worked for the Virgin Islands Behavioral Services as an Assistant Program Manager and at the Department of Labor as an Adult Coordinator.  He is a member of various community oriented organizations such as: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Hispanos Unidos; the Edward L. Browne Center; the Enrique Romero Nieves American Legion, Post 102; Women’s Coalition of the Virgin Islands; Department of Health: Virgin Islands Prevention (VIP); State Incentive Grant (SIG) Program; volunteer for the Virgin Islands Cancer Society; conducted workshops for adolescents and education, and educational directives for the AZ Academy.  Senator Sanes is the recipient of several awards and honors which include, but are not limited to:  Award from Department of Health for his leadership on the Prevention Advisory Council and his dedication to the Virgin Islands Community; certificate of Appreciation in recognition of Valuable Contribution to the UVI Alumni Give Back Program Convocation; Citizen of the Year Award given by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Department of Human Service Appreciation for Employment of People with Disabilities; It’s About Giving our Children a Chance-VI Behavioral Services Award; voted most successful Legislator in the 28th  and 29th Legislature of the Virgin Islands by Generation Now!

When the HOVENSA refinery closed, Senator Sanes invited a company called Tradesmen International to St. Croix.  This company successfully recruited several of the displaced HOVENSA employees.  He most recently was successfully nominated for the Visionary Voice Award which is an award that recognizes the creativity and hard work of individuals around the country who have demonstrated outstanding work to end sexual violence.  In his first three terms, Senator Sanes served as Senate Secretary (twice) and Senate Vice President.  He is currently serving his fourth term in the 31st Legislature of the Virgin Islands as Senate Majority Leader; he chairs the Committee on Energy and Environmental Protection; he is Vice-Chair for the Committee on Culture, Historic Preservation, Youth and Recreation, and he is a member of the following three Committees: Committee on Finance; Committee on Government Services, Consumer and Veterans' Affairs; Committee on Homeland Security, Public Safety and Justice.

Voted “Best Senator” for two consecutive years by the VI Daily News, Senator Sanes continues to address and provide tangible solutions for many issues facing St. Croix, and the Virgin Islands as a whole: from appropriating funds for several capital projects to legislating bills which provide protection for the territory’s citizens to improving economic stability and growth within the Virgin Islands.  Here are just two laws created by Senator Sanes which have a positive affect on the lives of many Virgin Islands: Act 7517 which protects spouses who are victims of actions that constitute rape or unlawful sexual contact in aggravated domestic violence instances to Act 7945 which appropriates $250,000 to the Department of Sports Parks and Recreation to further develop afterschool programs territory-wide, with the funds being divided equally between the district of St. Croix and the district of St. Thomas and St. John.

 

Family is most important to Sammuel Sanes.  His parents are Maria E. Sanes and the late Carmelo Sanes.  He is married to Mrs. Cinthia Sanes and has two daughters – Layalie and Jamaris.
