Message From The President of the 28th Legislature

Welcome to the 28th Legislature of the Virgin Islands.

The Legislature is the first branch of government, the house of the People; the place where the needs of the people meet the government.

Our mission is to reflect the pride and dignity of the people of the Virgin Islands and give the people a dignified legislature of which they can be proud.

In this house, representatives of the people, who were elected in free and fair elections, confront the issues of the era, debate the merits of different solutions and develop plans to guide the government in the direction chosen by the people. In this house, our staff is made up of professionals whose mandate is to deliver quality service to all who come to seek our assistance.

In this house, our mission is to respond to the challenges of our times.  We develop solutions to the problems of economic recovery and offer remedies to our social challenges; we strive to solve the problems that confront us and seek the greatest good for the people of the Virgin Islands.

In this house, we examine the government’s plan to spend the people’s money.  It is here that we set priorities, plan budgets, approve or disapprove spending. In this house, we bear the burden of taxing the people by choosing which taxes are enough to perform the business of government without overburdening the people. It is here that we must balance priorities and set limits on the reach of government spending.

In this house, we examine the people who are offered by our Governor as his officials and commissioners of the executive branch. We bear the solemn responsibility of performing checks and balances on the Executive Branch of government.   We do this with the utmost respect for the people of the Virgin Islands and work to give our people a legislative process that is respectful of all people who come before this legislature, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political persuasion.

This is the people’s house.  The doors are open, the legislators and professional staff are working for the good of the people, and we are all charged with the task of listening to those who have chosen us for these offices.

We serve the people and we work in concert with the other branches of government, being mindful of the separation of powers and respectful of our Executive Branch and our Judicial Branch.

We are all in this together and we are all committed to serving the people.

You select the people who represent you in this house.

You pay our salaries and we are here to serve you.

This is the house where government of the people, by the people and for the people lives and thrives.
Welcome to the People’s House.
