Senator Adlah “Foncie” Donastorg was born December 30, 1962 to Josefina and Adlah Donastorg, Sr. He attended the Herbert Lockhart and Joseph Gomez elementary schools before beginning his secondary education at the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School. He later attended Charlotte Amalie High School and completed his studies at Bassett High School in California.
Senator Donastorg majored in business management at Fullerton College, Mount St. Antonio College and the University of the Virgin Islands. He maintains that learning should be a lifelong process and is in the process of completing a new business degree online with the University of Phoenix.
Previously he worked as a Law Enforcement Officer at the V.I. Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs before spending two years as a Collection Agent with the V.I. Department of Health. He worked as a special assistant and researcher in the 16th, 17th, and 18th Legislatures. Senator Donastorg later entered the business world and greatly values his entrepreneurial experiences.
Senator Donastorg was elected to the 21st Legislature in 1994, where he assumed chairmanship of the Committee on Planning and Environmental Protection and served on the Law Revision Commission. He retained this chairmanship in the 22nd and 23rd Legislatures. During his tenure, he addressed critical quality of life issues while bringing conservation issues to the forefront. He represented the 22nd and 23rd Legislatures nationally as Liaison to the U.S. Congress and served on numerous legislative committees including Health, Finance, Rules and Government Operations. His service in the 24th Legislature included efforts to reduce the size of the Legislature, protect the environment, prevent the abuse of children and animals, improve education, and to expose corruption within both the executive branch and the legislative body.
One of his greatest professional challenges came in 2003, when he assumed the Chairmanship of the 25th Legislature’s Committee on Finance. In this capacity, he was charged with overseeing the entire territorial budget and managing the Post Audit Division.
In 2006, Senator Donastorg faced an even greater challenge when he ran an assertive campaign for the office of Governor. Though not successful in the gubernatorial election, the Senator came away with a greater knowledge of Territorial issues and a renewed commitment to public service. Following the 2006 elections, Senator Donastorg took a break from public life to pursue academic and business interests and spent more time with his family. He remains very active in many areas. His recent relevant experiences include lecturing on environmental policy before the Kansas Law Review.
In 2008, Senator Donastorg reentered the political arena as a Democratic candidate for the 28th Legislature. He remains extremely grateful for the overwhelming support of the people of St. Thomas and St. John District.
In addition to his many political and professional activities, Senator Donastorg maintains an exceptional interest in physical fitness and sports – particularly boxing, basketball and baseball. In 2003, he helped to organize and host the Virgin Islands first professional sports event in championship boxing, which was broadcast live to millions of households via ESPN.
Senator Donastorg’s political career has been marked by ongoing efforts to resolve many of the territory’s most complex and controversial issues. He looks forward to demonstrating his commitment and leadership as President of the 28th Legislature.
Senator Adlah “Foncie” Donastorg, Jr. is married to the former Benedicta “Bennie” Acosta from the island of St. Croix. He has six children, Sean, Adlah, Vanessa, Erika, Adonte and Amiel Donastorg.
