His major focus of study was in Accounting and Political Science. In 1980 he graduated from the University of Detroit with a Bachelor of Science degree.

While at the University of Detroit, Jimi was a member of the fencing team and won the 1980 Michigan State Fencing Championship. At age 22, Jimi began his professional career at HOVIC as a Cost Analyst for their $25 million budget. His first entrepreneurial venture was at the age of 24, when he owned and operated Pelican Cove Night Club. Still remembered as one of the hottest spots on St. Croix in the 1980s. As Pan American’s Airline Manager, he repeatedly achieved on-time performance records. Jimi was a partner in AyAy Promotions, as racetrack promoters, they are still recognized as having paid the highest purse. While Manager at Mastertime Watch Company, Jimi was responsible for paying his employees in cash after Hurricane Hugo. After seventeen years, he began a career in sales. He has worked for Columbian Emeralds in St. Croix, St. Thomas, Ketchikan, and Juneau. He has also managed Bernard K. Passman Galleries in Las Vegas, Alaska, and Main Street St. Thomas. Prior to running his successful Senatorial campaign, Jimi was employed by Caribbean Auto Mart.

He is married to Gerri Barnes. They have a blended family of four children, Rita, Ashli, Amanda, and Jaye.
