Juan Figueroa-Serville was born to Major
(Retired, US. Army/Virgin Islands Army National Guard) Juan
Figueroa Melendez and Catherine Serville Figueroa in Fajardo,
Puerto Rico on September 16, 1974. Juan’s mother the former
Catherine Serville is a native of Trinidad, who moved to St.
Croix over 35 years ago. Juan Jr. was raised in St. Croix,
US. Virgin Islands. Juan grew up as a military “brat” while
his father served in both the U.S. Air Force and the Virgin
Islands Army National Guard. He is a graduate of St. Mary’s
Catholic School, class of 1988, and Joseph’s Catholic High
School, class of 1992, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. A
very determined and ambitious young man, Juan has many
dreams and aspirations he wants to achieve in his life.
Upon graduating from college, he will
further his education as he aspires to obtain a Masters of
Arts Degree in Public Administration, and a Masters of Arts
Degree in International Affairs. A very proud senior from
the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix-Campus, Juan
is in the process of obtaining a Bachelors of Arts Degree in
Business Administration with a concentration in Business
Management. Juan has and still enjoys using his athletic
talent as a semi-professional baseball player. He plays in
the Edgar Isles AA baseball men’s league, where his team,
the “Crucian Yankees” were the defending St. Croix baseball
Champions for 2003. He was fortunate to live his passion for
baseball as a college baseball player. Juan played
competitive baseball at the NCAA level for the University of
the Virgin Islands, Brevard Community College, and Barry
University. He has been ranked and was considered among top
professional baseball prospects in the US. Virgin Islands to
sign a professional baseball contract various times. For the
past 8 years, Juan has volunteered to assist the Baseball
Specialist of St. Croix, Mr. Ellerton Maynard, to mentor,
coach, and prepare future college and professional bound
baseball high school athletes to reach and harness their
skills and talents.
Due to a potential career ending sports
injury, Juan has channeled his passion and childhood reams
for baseball into completing his academic career and enters
public service. Juan is a proud member of the Roman Catholic
Church order, The Knights of Columbus, a fraternal and
social community of Catholic men. Being a Knight has been a
blessing for Juan as he fulfills the mission of the Knights,
to place an emphasis in strengthening the family unit and
mentoring youth groups such as the Colombian Squires. Juan
is interested in being found worthy to be apart of
worldrenowned social fraternity, the Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Inc.
Juan has had the high honor of having one of his academic
analytical papers become published by the Leeward Breezes,
Student Publications, for the University of the Virgin
Islands. At that time, his English professor, Dr. Roberta
Knowles, nominated his literary work to be approved worthy
by a panel-board of UVI professors and English major’s
(upper class-person students). The Leeward Breezes is a
reference source in the UVI Library. To most people’s
surprise, Juan is also a very talented singer. A 1st tenor
with a baritone range, Juan, accompanied by his father, Juan
Sr., Mr. Jeremiah Evans, and Mr. Ralph, have had the honor
of formally singing the Roman Catholic Church’s Litany of
Saints in Latin, acapella, for the priestly and deaconate
ordinations of Rev. FatherTroy De’chabert-Schuster, and the
priestly ordination of Rev. Father John Mark.
During the summer of 2002, he had the
honor of working as Senior Counselor- physical education
instructor with the 4-H Club under the UVI- Cooperative
Extension Service Dept. Juan had the privilege of learning
about rendering quality customer service in the private
sector, as he was a Sales Associate for FOOTACTION, USA,
Sunny Isle branch while completing his studies as a fulltime
college student. Currently, Juan works for the Lt. Governor
of the Virgin Islands, the Honorable Vargrave A. Richards in
the capacity of Youth Outreach Coordinator, Public
Representative, and Liaison to the Monbijou and Williams
Delight Home Owners Associations.
The people of St. Croix found Juan
worthy to bear the greatest honor that any citizen could
ever obtain, to serve in the highest office of the land, the
1st branch of government, as a senator for the 26th
Legislature of the Virgin Islands beginning January 10,
2005. Even more special for the people of St. Croix, Juan is
currently the youngest public representative to be elected
in the history of the Legislature of the Virgin Islands at
the age of 30. Cherishing the value for family life as most
Hispanic and Caribbean cultures do, Juan Figueroa-Serville
wishes to have a future family of his own and be a positive
mentor and role model for the youth of the Virgin Islands.
