Carmen Miranda Wesselhoft was born on the island of
St. John on January 7, 1963 to the late Cardinal I.
Wesselhoft and Alma V. Smith Wesselhoft. She is the
youngest of 10 children and proud to be among the
last generation of Virgin Islanders to be born on
the island of St. John. However, Carmen truly hopes
that there will soon be a new generation of “born
St. Johnians”, as she strongly supports the creation
of a birthing center so pregnant women will no
longer have to travel to St. Thomas to deliver their
babies.
Carmen attended the Julius E. Sprauve School until 9th
grade when she began commuting to St. Thomas to
attend Nazareth Bay High School, now known as Ivanna
Eudora Kean High School. She graduated in 1980 and
earned a full scholarship from Cardow Jewelers to
attend the University of the Virgin Islands on St.
Thomas.
While at UVI Carmen studied Business and
participated in many activities, to include
softball. Carmen excelled as an athlete and was
involved with numerous softball teams, playing games
both here and abroad. She later began to share her
love of the sport with children and has coached
Little League and T-ball.
Carmen graduated from UVI in 1985 with a Bachelor’s
Degree in Business Management. Soon after her
graduation she was hired by the University to
coordinate the Cooperative Extension Service’s 4H
Youth Development Program. Carmen found great
satisfaction in working with young people through
UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service and retained her
position until being elected as the U.S. Virgin
Islands Senator-At-Large in 2006.
She maintains a strong belief in the value of
community service and is involved in several
organizations to include serving as a board member
of the St. John Safety Zone, St. John Taxi Service
and the Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority.
She is also a member of the Bethany Moravian Church
and the Bethany Moravian Activist Club.
Additionally, Carmen has been a longtime advocate
for education and youth issues, responsible
development and increased public safety for all
Virgin Islanders.
Carmen and her family are well known for creating a
festive atmosphere in Cruz Bay during the holiday
season. Each year her mother adorned their home with
many Christmas lights, winning First Prize for
holiday decorating from the Department of Tourism on
more than one occasion. Carmen is honored to
maintain this tradition and the Wesselhoft artistic
exhibit of Christmas cheer is on display each year
from December 15 to January 7.
She is the proud mother of 11-year-old Hannah
Hedrington.
